First Sunday of Lent

February 28/March 1, 2009

FOOD FOR THE WEEK

Reading I                  Genesis 9.8-15
Responsorial Psalm:  Your ways, O Lord, are love and truth to those who keep your  covenant.
Reading II      1 Peter 3.18-22
Gospel:    Mark 1.12-15

• I, too, have known times of temptation when I felt on my own except fro the wild beasts, the irrational forces that were messing up my life.
• Lord, you felt the influence of evil and were tested. You were purified as you came through a difficult time. When I was in the middle of such a time, it did not feel like God’s hand, but like desolation and despair.  When I look back, I can see how God was shaping me.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON – ST. AL’S
It seems that when we repaired the roof of the church, some parishioners were disappointed that we neglected to ask for their contribution.  However, it’s not too late since w had to deplete our reserves when we paid for those repairs.  If some of you would like to contribute now, just drop your donation in an ordinary envelope with your name and envelope number in the Sunday collection basket over the next few weeks. Thank you.

DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE, the international development arm of the Canadian Catholic Church, has produced a Lenten Lifestyle Awareness Calendar for many years. Popular with families and young people, it invites us to reflect on the wealth we enjoy as part of our lifestyle on each of the 40 days of Lent. There are opportunities for prayer, discussion, and a few ideas on raising DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE funds in schools. Each family is invited to make donations recognizing our relative affluence. Please spread the word about the calendar to people you know. DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE’s annual fundraising collection will take place in this parish on Solidarity Sunday, March 29, 2009 Every year your contribution helps thousands of men, women and children in countries of the South to improve their lives.
