THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

December 13/14, 2008

FOOD FOR THE WEEK

Reading I  Isaiah 6.1-2a, 10-11
Responsorial Psalm: My soul rejoices in my God.
Reading II    1 Thessalonians 5.16-24
Gospel:  John 1.6-8, 19-28

• These are the words of Isaiah, God’s servant. Jesus applied them to himself. They apply to us, too, as Christians.
• God speaks to us here and asks us to “proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” How am I going to respond? What am I going to do to make 2009 a year when people experience the love of God and are freed from captivity, oppression and heartbreak?
• If I think I can do nothing, listen to God’s promise: the Lord will make justice spring up as surely as what is sown springs up from a garden.

HIDDEN TALENTS IN MUSIC MINISTRY?

Have you thought about getting involved? Thinking perhaps you would like to take on a leadership role in the liturgy by sharing your gifts in music? If this strikes a note with you, you are invited to speak to Father Gyan or Caroline Cook to explore possibilities for the new year.  Merry Christmas!

ENVELOPES
If you are interested in having collections envelopes for either parish, please contact the office or one of your Wardens.  Envelopes are a convenient way to make your contribution to support your church and get an Income tax receipt at the same time.  Receipts are issued at the end of the year in time for your tax return.

FLOWERS FOR ALTAR AT CHRISTMAS – St. Al’s and St. Columban
We could do it in two ways:
1. You could make a financial donation in the box designated for this at the main and side  entrances.
2. You could bring a poinsettia to the church yourself in memory of a deceased relative. If  possible bring them December 21st (St. Al’s) and 24th (St. Columban).

TODAY’S SPECIAL COLLECTION – FOR CHARITABLE FUND – St.Al’s
Next Sunday, December 14 there will be a special collection for the Charitable Fund to help with the food baskets.  We will be helping 20 families, which include 40 children.  And we need your help, as funds are low.  To receive a tax receipt for your donation, please use the blue envelopes in your boxes or you will find some blue envelopes  at the entrances to the church.  Please include you envelope number and/or your name on the envelope. We thank you for your continuous support.

ANGEL TREE CAMPAIGN
You may have seen  a tree at the back of the church with pink and blue angels on it.  This tree represents the children that are helped with our Christmas Baskets.   Each angel is a child that we help, showing their age on the back.  We include a gift for each of them in our food baskets. We would appreciate if you would take one or two angels home and buy a gift for them.  Please wrap the gift and have it returned to the parish by December 17th.  You may leave them at the back of the church or bring them to the office.  Please do not include your name on the gift and make sure the angel tab is attached on the outside of the gift. Thank you for your support.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS FOOD DRIVE – St. Al’s & St. Columban
The annual Christmas food drive has begun.  Please feel free to donate canned food, pickles, pasta, rice, toothpaste, laundry detergent, etc.  We will be collecting specifically for the Christmas food baskets up to December 14, but please continue to donate throughout the year.  Thank you for your cooperation in bringing a Merry Christmas to the less fortunate in our community.

VICTORIA'S QUILTS CANADA QUILT RAFFLE 2008
Thank you to everyone who so generously supported Victoria's Quilts Canada again this year through the quilt raffle.
Eventhough we were lucky 3 out of the last 4 years, this year the quilts went elsewhere.   The winners were: 1st Prize - Francoise Poirier,  2nd Prize - Jeanne Mareau-Joyal, both from Ottawa. The 3rd Prize was won by Irene Lafleche  from Kingston.
If you know of anyone who has cancer, you can go directly to www.victoriasquiltscanada.com, or call Ann Dunlop at 819-246-7376 to request a quilt.  Since 1998, over 11,000 quilts have been sent to cancer patients across Canada.  There is no charge for this.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION AND PRAYER

You are all invited to join the group of prayer and adoration in the Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament every Sunday from 4 to 5 o’clock pm in St. Aloysius Church.  Please note that this coming advent 2008 will mark the 12th anniversary of Eucharistic Adoration and Evening Prayer at St. Aloysius Church.

In the words of Mother Julienne of the Rosary, who is presently a candidate for sainthood in Rome, “Pray that our Lord will send many adorators to His Church. My dream is that there be many priests, parishes, Eucharistic families, communities, prayer groups and generations of worshippers. Love and glory to the Holy Trinity through the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus.”

THANK YOU – Meet & Greet
I would like to thank all the people who brought food, helped set-up and clean-up after our Meet & Greet this past Sunday.  Your participation is greater appreciated.
