SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

December 4/5, 2010

FOOD FOR THE WEEK

Reading I                             Isaiah 11.1-10

Responsorial Psalm:             In his days may righteousness flourish, and peace abound forever.

Reading II                            Romans 15.4-9

Gospel:                                Matthew 3.1-12

·         Isn’t it extraordinary how a mortified man draws people. We admire one whose needs are minimal, who is the master of his own appetites, who has a deep interior freedom. John the Baptist, with minimal clothes and minimal food, was a magnet. People trusted him because clearly he could not be bought.

·         Where are the chains on me, the appetites that I have not mastered, and that pull me in ways I do not want? Help me towards a freer heart and body, Lord.

ADVENT is HERE

Advent marks the start of a new liturgical season and a new focus for us as community.  Last year (Year C) our music and visuals reflected TRUST. For this new liturgical season (Year A) we contemplate COURAGE, specifically a call for us to be courageous, a call of hope and not fear.

This Advent let us "Take Courage knowing the day is near!"

Yes indeed, this can often be a busy time and it is easy to lose site of what is important to us as Catholics. May we "carve out pockets of time" during this advent to reflect, as individuals, as couples and as families, on the gift that was given to us - Jesus Christ. We hope the booklets can help with these moments of reflection and prayer.

Here is wishing us all a prayerful and joyful Advent season.

ANGEL TREE CAMPAIGN

You may have seen a tree at the back of the church with pink and blue angels on it.  This tree represents the children that are helped with our Christmas Baskets.   Each angel is a child that we help, showing their age on the back.  We include a gift for each of them in our food baskets. We would appreciate if you would take one or two angels home and buy a gift for them.  Please wrap the gift and have it returned to the parish by December 17th.  You may leave them at the back of the church or bring them to the office.  Please do not include your name on the gift and make sure the angel tab is attached on the outside of the gift. Thank you for your support.

FLOWERS FOR ALTAR AT CHRISTMAS – St. Al’s and St. Columban

We could do it in two ways:
1.         You could make a financial donation in the box designated for this at the main and           side entrances.
2.         You could bring a poinsettia to the church yourself in memory of a deceased relative.        If possible bring them December 19th (St. Al’s) and 24th (St. Columban).

THE NEW LIVING WITH CHRIST SUNDAY MISSALS

The new Sunday Missals have arrived and are in the church.  We only have a limited amount (75), so if you plan on taking one home please leave $6.00 in the basket at the entrances for this purpose.  Thank you.

ENVELOPES

If you are interested in having collections envelopes for either parish, please contact the office or one of your Wardens.  Envelopes are a convenient way to make your contribution to support your church and get an Income tax receipt at the same time.  Receipts are issued at the end of the year in time for your tax return.
